Solistes Européens Luxembourg and pianist Jean Muller will premiere the piano concerto Deconstructing Love by Ivan Boumans, winner of the 2020/21 International Classical Music Awards (ICMA) Composer Award, at the Luxembourg Philharmonie on September 26.
The new work sprang from « deep personal introspection, » the composer says, and this is based « on my experience, numerous readings, and countless encounters with artists, researchers, people of faith and science. »
To structure this vast material, he says he decided to return to the origin, that of the classical concerto in three movements, a first in sonata form, the second in free tempo, and a third in rondo form: « Like love, musical composition is free of rigid corsets. That’s why purist musicologists will be outraged when they see that I don’t always adhere strictly to the prescribed structures. »
The first movement is titled Amo ergo sum (I love, therefore I am), the second Law of attraction, and the third is called Oxytocine.
